In providing proper nutrition to the plant you allow the plant to utilize what it needs to achieve proper growth. Running out of one nutrient too early may limit plant growth and not allow the plant to utilize the other nutrients you have applied. If that happens yields may be reduced and you are wasting money on fertilizer that is not being used.

Proper nutrition has it's benefits, the most obvious being increased yields. Some other benefits though are yield consistency and reduced loss during crop stress years.
